Better Call Saul – S3E1 – Mabel

Season three of Better Call Saul picks up right where it left off, with Chuck procuring an incriminating tape of Jimmy and Mike out in the desert, shocked to find that someone has outsmarted him. And while the first hour is more intriguing than explosive, the stage seems to be set for some big, inevitable events. Jimmy and Mike, as different as their arcs may be, are inching ever closer to the characters we knew on Breaking Bad.

And with Better Call Saul’s return naturally, Saul Searching is back as well to recap and discuss the show in the most obsessive nature that time will allow. It also bears noting that this is a bit of a special episode of the podcast because, for the first (and possibly only) time, John and Chris are in the same room to record an episode. Normally they do it on the phone between Baltimore and Birmingham, respectively. See if you can tell any difference at all.

The questions surrounding the season premiere still linger at episode’s end. What will be the ultimate cost of Jimmy’s morally shifty methods? How, exactly, does Chuck intend to use the tape of his brother’s confession? Will the blowback from that destroy Kim’s career? There’s also the matter of Gene’s collapse and the unknown cause thereof. And lastly, even though we have a pretty good idea about this one, who is following Mike, and why?

The plot threads pile up, the sense of dread increases, and we have a return appearance from our favorite shady veterinarian. It’s more or less all you could ask from a season premiere. The walls are closing around Jimmy and the possibilities are expanding for him at the same time. A similar thing could be said about Mike. Stay tuned with us as we sort through it all.
