Ash vs Evil Dead – S01E01 – El Hefe

Jamie and Shawn react to the Evil Dead movie series making it’s debut on the Starz Network.  Ash is back baby and they have a lot to say.

El Hefe Recap

Ash has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead until a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind and Ash becomes mankind’s only hope.

Older, but not necessarily wiser, Ash is hiding out in a trailer park and has essentially given up his heroic ways. He embraces growing old gracefully with the use of girdle, the right amount of cologne, and his trademark charm. Even though Ash is living on the down low, he still insists on hitting bars and looking for desperate women that will throw him some pity sex in exchange for free drinks and lies about heroic deeds that led to the loss of Ash’s hand. When Ash starts hallucinating the return of deadites in the middle of an uncomfortable romantic bathroom romp, he is aware the the Evil may have returned. And it is all his fault. While drunk and high one night, Ash had dusted off the old Necronomicon Ex-Mortis and recited some passages to impress a girl. The moment of realization can be encaptured in the single word Ash utters, “Fuuuuuuuuuck.”

While Ash deals with his mistake, Sheriff Deputy Amanda Fisher and her partner check out a disturbance call. The disturbance happens to be the young woman who was with Ash boozing it up and reciting passages from a book best kept under lock and key. The young woman becomes a deadite and soon Amanda has to kill her and her possessed partner.

The next morning, Ash plans on skipping town and seeing a rare bookstore owner about reversing the mistake he made. Packing up to leave his trailer park, he suddenly sees his elderly neighbor Vivian and hallucinates her as a Deadite giving him another warning.

Needing cash for his escape, Ash heads to work  to get his paycheck and blow off work. His boss, Mr. Roper, has no intention of letting Ash get paid without working his shift.

Ash’s coworker, Pablo, stops by to tell Ash he got his friend Kelly hired and tells Ash that he can’t skip town. Ash is impressed with Pablo’s female friend and decides that even with the approaching evil, he needs to hit on her. The humorous way Kelly turns Ash down reveals that Kelly is a bit of a badass in her own right.

Later, Ash is working in the stockroom, when the Evil first comes calling. After possessing the doll of a princess ballerina, the Evil comes close to taking Ash out when Pablo steps in and kills the vicious child’s toy. Ash recounts his experiences during the Evil Dead movies (specifically Evil Dead 2), and decides to head out. Pablo chases after him, telling Ash that maybe he’s the only one that can beat the Evil.

Ash splits and Kelly is on her phone with her dad. Kelly thinks she sees her dead mom and tells Pablo she needs to get to her dad’s house. Pablo agrees to take her, but they first have to escaping the oncoming Evil. Pablo takes her to Ash’s trailer first, and soon the three have to square off against two Deadites. In the final showdown, Ash remembers the one thing he was good at: being Groovy and kicking some undead ass.
